Introduction
The Kakad Aarti is a deeply sacred morning hymn traditionally sung at dawn to awaken the Divine presence within our hearts. Authored by Saint Lakshmi, this beautiful composition reveals the inner path (Antar-Sadhana) of total surrender and self-realization. By offering our body, speech, and mind as the sacred wick, soaked in divine love (Sneha) and breath-awareness (So-ham), we offer our ego at the lotus feet of the Sadguru. Saint Lakshmi guides us to light the inner flame of spiritual knowledge (Jnana), transforming every breath into continuous worship and peace.
Verses & Spiritual Reflections
Verse I
काकड आरती माझ्या सद्गुरू राया ।
काया वाचा मने प्रेमे ओवाळीन पाया ॥ १ ॥
Kakad Aarti majha sadguru raya |
Kaya vacha mane preme ovalin paya ||1||
“O Beloved Sadguru, Lord of my Soul! I offer this early morning Kakad Aarti at Your sacred lotus feet, pouring out my love through my body, speech, and mind.”
Contemplation
An outer Kakada is a cotton wick lit to awaken the Lord. But true worship begins when a seeker offers their entire being—Tan, Man, Wacha (body, mind, and speech)—at the Holy Feet. Pure surrender (Sharanagati) is the true flame that pleases the Master.
Verse II
काया माया वाचा याचा काकडा केला ।
सोऽहं स्मरण स्नेहामाजी सगळा भिजविला ॥ २ ॥
Kaya maya vacha yacha kakada kela |
soham smaran snehamaji sagala bhijavila ||2||
“I have crafted the sacred wick out of my body, speech, and worldly attachments (Maya), soaking it in the oil of divine love and the constant remembrance of ‘So-ham’ (‘I am That’).”
Contemplation
Saint Lakshmi teaches us to turn worldly thoughts into an offering for God. The oil feeding this flame is Sneha—meaning both holy oil and unshakeable divine love. Saturated with the breath of So-ham (“I am the Supreme Self”), daily life becomes a prayer.
Verse III
आत्माचिये पोटी ज्ञान काकडा ज्योती ।
मीपण तूपण शोधूनि पाहता प्रकाशिली दीप्ती ॥ ३ ॥
Atmachiye poti dnyan kakada jyoti |
Meepan tupan shodhuni pahata prakashili deepti || 3 ||
“Deep within the Soul burns the radiant lamp of Divine Knowledge (Jnana). As I look within, the feeling of ‘I’ (ego) and ‘You’ (duality) vanishes, and the Supreme Light shines forth.”
Contemplation
The wick of devotion ignites Jnana—living spiritual wisdom that destroys ignorance. Looking inward (shodhuni pahata), the seeker sees that the boundaries separating “me” (Meepan) and “the world / Divine” (Toopan) are illusory. Only one unbroken Divine Light remains.
Verse IV
शास्त्रे मौनावली वेद पांगुळे झाले ।
स्वयंप्रकाश नेणे अवघे विश्वचि उजळीले ॥ ४ ॥
Shastre maunavali ved pangule zhale |
swayamprakash nene avaghe vishwachi ujalile ||4||
“Before this Self-luminous Divine Experience, scriptures fall silent and the Vedas stand humbled. This self-shining Light illuminates the entire cosmos far beyond human intellect.”
Contemplation
Sacred books point toward the Truth, but fall silent when direct inner experience (Anubhuti) dawns. The Sadguru’s grace reveals a Light that is Swayamprakash (Self-shining), enlightening both the inner mind and the outer world.
Verse V
भक्तीमुक्ती दासी उभ्या दोन्ही शेजारी ।
सेवा जाणविती अवघ्या आपुले परी ॥ ५ ॥
Bhaktimukti dasee ubhya donhi shejari |
Seva janviti avaghya apule pari || 5 ||
“Devotion (Bhakti) and Liberation (Mukti) stand like humble, devoted servants by the Sadguru’s side, eagerly serving in their own divine ways.”
Contemplation
Seekers often struggle to earn Bhakti or Mukti. Yet, for a devotee surrendered at the Guru’s feet, both flow naturally like gentle helpers. Surrender brings divine love and freedom from suffering effortlessly.
Verse VI
कर्मे ब्रह्मार्पण हाचि नैवेद्य ताटी ।
आनंद नवनीत, निजरूप बोधाची वाटी ॥ ६ ॥
Karme brahmarpan hachi naivedya tati |
Anand navneet, nijaroop bodhachi vati || 6 ||
“Offering all daily actions unto the Supreme (Brahmarpan) is the sacred meal presented to God. Divine Joy (Ananda) is the fresh butter, served in the bowl of Self-knowledge.”
Contemplation
Doing work selflessly without ego is the highest holy offering (Naivedya). The sweet fruit of this practice is pure bliss (Ananda), churned like fresh butter from a quiet heart and held in Self-awareness.
Verse VII
झाला काकडा, सदगुरु चरणावरि माथा, श्रीगुरु .. ।
भक्तीज्ञान अखंड द्यावे, लक्ष्मीसी आता ॥ ७ ॥
Jhala kakadaa, sadguru charanavari matha, shriguru… |
Bhaktidnyaan akhand dyave, lakshmisi aata || 7 ||
“The Kakad Aarti is completed as I bow my head at the Sadguru’s lotus feet. May the
devotee (Lakshmi) be blessed forever with unbroken Devotion (Bhakti) and Divine Wisdom (Jnana).”
Contemplation
The hymn ends in total surrender (Atma-Nivedan). Bowing the head means letting go of ego and pride. Saint Lakshmi asks for no material wealth, only eternal love for God (Akhanda Bhakti) and unshakeable inner vision (Akhanda Jnana).
